IPv4 and IPv6: what changes?
Two address formats
IPv4 addresses contain 32 bits, usually written as four decimal numbers such as 192.0.2.1. IPv6 addresses contain 128 bits and use hexadecimal groups, such as 2001:db8::1. These examples are reserved for documentation.
Reading IPv6
Leading zeroes within an IPv6 group can be omitted. A double colon can replace one consecutive run of zero groups. It can appear only once in an address, so the full set of eight groups can be reconstructed unambiguously.
Which address does a website see?
A connection uses one address family. A device may support both, but this page reports the address used for this request. IPv6 offers a much larger address space; it does not by itself guarantee privacy, speed or security.
